Medical Billing

There are a number of different medical fields that are easy to get started in and that have a lot of job openings. One of these fields is medical billing. Although some will hire people to work in this field without any special training, most require you to complete a medical billing or billing and coding course. However, these courses are typically certificate programs that take one year or less to complete.

Completing insurance paperwork is time-consuming and sometimes confusing. Each diagnosis and procedure must be assigned a proper code for the insurance company to pay the claim. An assistant in a doctor’s office may not have the proper training to complete this paperwork. The doctor does not receive any of this training in medical school. Outsourcing this work allows staff to focus on patients, scheduling and managing files. In addition, a person only working on claims does not have these distractions. They become familiar with the insurance company’s policies and procedures. This speeds up the payment to the doctor and increases cash flow to the practice.

There are also problems with patients and companies who do not agree with the bills submitted for payment. Someone has to justify all the fees billed to these individuals and companies before payment will be made. Some patients are not able or willing to pay their debts to the clinic, and arrangements have to be made to collect those fees or at least partial fees. A medical billing service can do collections and get paid for the clinic faster. They can increase payments and reimbursements from individuals and insurance companies.

Medical billing companies employ people who specialize in this field. They have completed a 2 year program on medical billing and coding. These programs are available through community colleges, vocational schools and online schools. There is further training available through the American Health Information Management Association. They offer national certification once someone has achieved about 2 years of field experience. Certified medical coders and billers can eventually work from home, travel as a consultant or start their own business.
