Basic Concepts on British Academic Dress
When a student got the graduation or masters or any type of doctorate degree they always wear the academic dress to enjoy the graduation ceremony. This tradition is maintained by all the universities of the world and the Britain is no difference from that. They are the birth place of this tradition. You have to wear the doctoral gowns, hood, habit and cap for the complete academic dress and the famous and older three universities of Britain the Oxford, the Cambridge and the St Andrews have their own traditions about that. They have their own rules and regulations about their student’s academic dresses.
The Academic Dress of Oxford: When a student admitted in the BA course they usually wear the undergraduate commoner’s or the doctoral gowns of their school. If any student admitted on the post graduation course then he or she wears the hood and doctoral gowns of their former school of Oxford or where from they completed their graduation. When they formally admit in the university then they are given the formal Oxford gowns and hoods. After that they wear the new gowns and hoods and got into the ceremony of their admission. If you admitted in the doctorate level you will get the doctoral gowns and hoods for your academic dresses.
The Academic Dress of Cambridge: Cambridge has its own design, patters, colors and rules for the academic dress and doctoral gowns for the students of their university. If you admit into the undergraduate level you can wear the gowns and hoods of your former school and can also wear the hoods of your level. The MA level students can wear the gowns of their graduation level and hoods of the highest level. They can wear their standard academic dress after they admit into the ceremony of their admission. After the ceremony they functionally become the members of Cambridge.
The Academic Dress St Andrews: When the grandaunts admit to get into the university for graduation level they can wear the dress of their graduation level but only the gowns not the doctoral gowns and after the graduation ceremony of their admission they can formally wear the dress of their university with the hoods of graduation. All their dress parts will be the same standard. If you get into the university for a doctorate degree then you can wear the doctoral gowns and hoods with the cap and habit. They also have some other formalities for their clothing.
